Emily,
I had some similar feelings during HN. There were many times where a song was
done, after meals or in a service, which was obviously known by many of the
"veterans" but new and unknown to me. In my evaluation, I suggested that
there be a longer orientation for newcomers, including teaching some of the
"standards" known by many of the veterans. I also
suggested considering having "tracks" so that people could spend more time in
an area that they felt was most important to them(song wrtiting,
adult/children choirs,leading services,youth groups,camps, etc.)
As someone who cannot run and jump around immediately after meals, I found
some of the sessions too long and uncomfortable for those few who were not
participating in the loud and often blaring dancing and singing. This was
especially uncomfortable for me when they did a song I had never heard, as it
was virtually impossible to hear the words and learn a new melody amidst the
noise and hub-bub. Maybe we can work together to have some changes made to
make it a less lonely/isolating experience for newcomers and those who do not
make quick friends and alliances in a large group situation.
Depite this, HN was an incredible experience for me, having been away from
songleading for 30 years. I do plan on signing up for next year, and for
years after that, though i WOULD PREFER NOT BEING IN THE DORM NEXT TIME.
Sincerely,
Michael Zimmer
