[HANASHIR:6032] choir placement

I have been giving some consideration to placing the volunteer choir I lead in 
the congregation rather than on the bima.  I thought that if they sang from one 
of the rows behind where most congregants sit, that they would encourage the 
participation of the congregants.  Has anyone had any experience trying this?  
Did it have the desired effect?  Did your choir members feel comfortable 
singing from there?
