[HANASHIR:5869] Re: Shoah/Holocaust music -- need your ideas

Our Kumzits/songswap has held Yom HaShoa commemorations. We've focused
mainly on the compositions of the poets and writers of the camps and ghettos,
many of whom were murdered by the Nazis. Amon others, we've included the
singing of
Eili, Eili
Ani Ma'amin
Far Vos Iz Der Himl
Moorsoldaten - Peat Bog Soldiers
Shtiler, Shtiler
Dremlen Feygel
Shtil Di Nacht
Here Beneath the Starry Splendor
Zog Nit Keyn Mol - Never Say

The words, music, singable translations and explanatory notes are from "We
Are Here - Songs of the Holocaust" published by the Workmen's Circle,
compiled by Eleanor Mlotek and Malke Gottlieb with a powerful introduction by
Elie Wiesel (which we've used as a reading), "Yes, We Sang! - Songs of the
Ghettos and Concentration Camps", compiled by Shoshana Kalisch with Barbara
Meister, and of course the compilations of Yiddish songs by Elanor and Joseph
Mlotek via the Workmen's Circle. (Pearls of Yiddish Song and The New Book of
Yiddish Songs). Knowing Yiddish is not required for learning and teaching
these songs. The translations and transliterations in these books are
wonderful.
We provide everyone with the words and music. The songs range from those of
resistance to the most tender of lullabies. There are many more to select
for an evening commemorating the poets and composers of the ghettos and camps.
