I work as the technology coordinator at a Solomon Schechter school and run an
all-Mac lab. For Hebrew, we use NisusWriter for the Macintosh, which has
several versions that are compatible with all the different Mac OS versions.
If you are using Mac OS 8.0 or below, you can download NisusWriter 4.x FREE
from www.nisus.com. You do, however, have to have the Apple Language Kit
installed (for which Apple charges). If you are using Mac OS 8,5, you have
to use NisusWriter 5.x, but the cost is for that software is under $100.00.
And you have to purchase the Apple Language Kit. For those of you current
enough to be using the Mac 9.0 OS, the Macintosh Hebrew Language Kit is
included at no extra charge in the software CD. You can download a 60-day
demo of NisusWriter 5.x from www.nisus.com.
In my opinion, NisusWriter is the only Hebrew WP software that works
consistenly with the new Mac OS versions in a bi-directional environment. If
you don't mind typing "backwards," then just get a Hebrew symbols font - I
think there are even some floating around out there in cyberspace that are
shareware.
