I don't have any experience with Elixir strings myself, but I've been
told that to some extent you "pay" for the extra longevity by a moderate
dulling in the *initial* sound.  In other words, a fresh set of Elixirs
will not be as bright as a fresh set of D'addarios or whatever.  This is
understandable given the technology and may well be an acceptable
tradeoff, particularly for those who play many hours a day or whose
finger oils are particularly dulling to strings (or people who just hate
cleaning strings after each playing).

Would those who have experience comment on this tradeoff -- does it
exist, and is it worth it?
