In the Reform prayer book (perhaps others too), prior to the Shabbat service
proper, their are a number of "introductory' readings taken from the Psalms.
These contain the words of some great opening songs. For example, Mizmor Shir
(Psalm 92), Shiru L'adonai (Psalm 96, I use Julie Silver's or C.Taubman's),
and Or Zarua (Psalm 97, Kleppers version). Tzadik Katamar, which was song so
beautifully at Hava Nashira last year is also from Psalm 92. (I'm sure there
are others too) I have used all of these successfully when leading Shabbat
Shira services at our Temple. I like this approach because one can use these
wonderful songs, taken right from the liturgy, thus tying singing into the
service itself. Recently I have used Noah Budin's "As We Gather in Your
Presence" as an opening song; it was enthusiastically received.
