I think it;s important to remember in context of this discussion that the 
Shaliach Tzibor is representing the entire congregation though his prayers. 
When he says these words quietly he is reminding himself that he is serving 
as the representative of all of the people in the room. For those who lead 
services it's nice reminder for all of us that we have an awesome 
responsibility on our shoulders.
