[HANASHIR:5529] RE: Hava Nashira

This question has come up a few times. I cannot speak officially for OSRUI,
but I will offer these comments:

1. Hava Nashira was designed initially for the purpose of improving the
quality of camp songleaders. Hence it was timed to happen before camp
starts, and after college ends. Camp staff orientation usually begins right
after Hava Nashira, with camp starting a week after that, so moving it later
is not practical or possible. Other events (like Sofer, Hagigah, etc.) are
scheduled to fit into other down times in the schedule.

Scheduling Hava Nashira earlier is not practical because conflicts would be
even worse.

2. Life is full of choices. It seems to me that a congregation or
organization that values their songleaders and music educators would be
willing to find suitable substitutes so that they could go to Hava Nashira.
Sure, most teachers hate to miss the last class or so, but, if you know well
in advance this will be happening, you adjust your lesson plans accordingly.

3. There is never a time that will suit everyone. The OSRUI staff has done
the right thing by following the Aristotelian mean, and choosing the time
that seems to work best for the pareties concerned, on the average.

4. One reason I have deliberately created the extended Hava Nashira
community by this list and web site is so that we can reach out to those who
can't get to Hava Nashira.

5. Hava Nashira is but one opportunity available to improve and strengthen
skills, gain repertoire, etc. While it is the only one uniquely focused on
songleaders, much can be gained from CAJE, various Mini-CAJE events, local
HN type get togethers and house concerts that are starting to happen around
the country, as well as events sponsored by ACC/GTM, CA, the North American
Jewish Choral Festival, workshops offered by the HUC Commission on Synagogue
Music, etc.

Hope this helps answer some questions for a few folks. I invite some
official answers from OSRUI.
