Dear Chevre,
Every year, my congregation sponsors a Jewish and food and cultural fair
called the "Blintze Brunch" for the greater community of Topeka, Kansas. It
will be on April 9 this year. Probably close to 1000 people come through on a
Sunday over the course of 5 hours. Our combined adult-student choir/ensemble
sings 3 sets of songs (mostly the same) and our folk dance group does at
least 2 sets of dances. This year, we are going to be singing Debbie
Friedman's "Hallelu" (which we started last year), Sheva's "Salaam," and most
likely Craig Taubman's "L'cha Dodi" from "Friday Night Live." We did a
quick read through Sam Glaser's "Across the River" last night but I am not
sure the whole group will be able to learn it. The other songs are standards
like "Heiveinu Shalom Aleichem" (the folksong, not Feingold), "Hinei Mah Tov"
(the dance melody), "Hinay Bah Hashalom" (Manor/Hirsch), Bashanah Habaah (one
Hebrew verse and 2 English verses), Debbie Friedman's Oseh Shalom, and the
Nigun on Jeff Klepper's "In this Place" recording which is called "Nigun
Simcho" on Robyn Helzner's "A Fire Burns" recording. Our singing is pretty
much background for the crowd, but many people do listen and watch. It is a
fun program - I go from singing to taking pictures to dancing a couple of
dances with the dance group, back to singing, etc. Foods served included
blintzes, bagels, knishes, rolled cabbage, and matza ball soup. A lot of
work but we make $7000-$8000.
Just thought I would share. Hope to be back at HN this year!
L'shalom,
