[HANASHIR:5477] Camp Swig CD

I got a copy of the Camp Swig/Newman CD a couple of weeks ago (thank
you very much Josh Miller) and it is truly a wonderful recording
which captures the ruach of what a summer of Jewish singing can be.

It's a virtual repertoire for any songleader taking you through an
entire camp day with sections representing morning prayers and song
sessions, shabbat prayers and music, and classic Jewish bed time fare.

Many of the 27 tracks on the CD are sung by large 'choirs' of kids
which are the ones which truly capture the spirt of singing at camp.
(And I can imagine it was no small feat to get so many kids all
singing the same words, in the same key at the same time.) Much of
the rest of the CD features more intricately arranged tracks from
notable Camp Swig/Newman songleaders (and song leader alumni) such as
Joanna Selznick Dulkin's amazing performance of Yishai Holander's
Shiru L'Adonai. If this track doesn't have you pulling your car over
and grooving on the side of the freeway, then you should seriously
consider a blood transfusion.

I was also thoroughly enchanted with Becky Gimbel's Sh'ma which is so
pure, so honest, so sweet, so fresh that I wanted to simultaneously
weep and marry her on the spot whoever she may be.

Kudos also to Ethan Bueno de Mesquita's Hash'kiveinu which which he
sings accompanied with stunning harmony by Rebecca Milder. I've
realized that I've never met a Hash'kiveinu which I didn't
like...which I didn't find extraordinarily beautiful. I think
everyone should write a Hash'kiveinu.

Oh, and finally a bonafide recording of the Tree Song from "Tree Song
Guy" himself Josh Miller (album producer and artistic director) which
helps lay to rest the 6 other versions of heard of it from other
people. (Though of course Josh has always said it's really the hand
motions and choreography of the song which are most important.)

I can't recommend this CD enough. All the proceeds benefit the music
programming at Camps Swig and Newman which is great as this summer
will begin a new camp session set up exclusively to teach new
songleaders.
