[HANASHIR:5043] Re: volunteer choir auditions?

Rachelle, I have changed our choirs over the years to suit the size and needs
of our congregation.

We have a "Family Choir" which, as you might guess, is mixed adults and kids.
The kids must be at least in grade level 4. This choir, which numbers
about 25, does two part harmony, rounds, canons, nigguns, etc... No
auditions. If they want to sing, they are welcome. They sing once a month
at Shabbat services.

Last year, I started a second choir which we call Makhaylah. (That's hebrew
for choir) This choir does more challenging arrangements. I invited our
strongest voices and those who had experience singing SATB arrangements. I
don't hold auditions for this choir, I just ask that those who join must be
at least high school age and are familiar with multi part choral singing. So
far it's worked out splendidly.

BTW, I've found Hava Nashira to be a wonderful resource for both choirs. Our
Family
Choir does many of the songs and nigguns that I've learned there and
Makhaylah does the Shimon Cohen arrangement of Hatikvah and Zemer Lach.

I hope this helps.
