Steve,
Are you perhaps referring to a "dumbek"? This is the Arabic name for a
"tof," or Middle Eastern Drum (yes, "tof" means both your garden variety
drum as well as the particular "Middle-Eastern" drum). A Tambur (which I
think is what you meant originally) is a lyre (which doesn't replace bongos
particularly well). Perhaps you can try phoning a local instrument store or
possibly Macallester College (which has an African drumming group, and may
also have a tof available somewhere).
