oops - I didn't mention shiva - absolutely it's a mitzvah and you can go to 
anyone's shiva just to be part of the minyan and perform the mitzvah of 
nichum avelim.  again, I wouldn't eat the food there...my personal feeling is 
that the candy and shiva trays people receive is for the mourners...
I agree totally with karen.
