I know it's off the list topic but had to comment...I had also thought that 
attending any simcha (actually, a shiva too, and other events) was a 
mitzvah...certainly sharing in joy or in sadness within the Jewish community 
brings people together.  As songleaders/artists/cantors we of all people know 
how nice and pleasant it is to bring people together...I hope this doesn't 
change in our current culture.  

I also want to say that I admire those who are attempting to step outside the 
box to become a cantor.
